The lawyer’s office was surprising cozy considering it was where the end of so many marriages were argued over. The room they were shown to had lots of potted plants and a nice view out to the harbor. It still had the obligatory table in the middle with chairs down either side. Mom looked pale, and her smile from last night was long gone. Mom’s lawyer, Sophie, said she would fight for them tooth and nail. She was a longtime friend of Mom, and they had gone to school together. Sophie always believed Dad had held Mom back.
Then Dad walked in with his new wife, and the reason why he wanted the extra money became abundantly clear. His new wife was pregnant, and from what Tessa could tell, at least seven months along. Tessa glanced to Mom, who she thought would be in shock. Instead, Mom had her hand over her mouth trying to stifle a giggle. Now she came to think of it, her father having to deal with messy diapers and sleepless nights was entirely amusing. She might be doing it herself soon, but she was half her father’s age. Then again, so was his new wife.
An hour later, and they had come to a decision. It had gone in Mom’s favor, sixty-forty. She had been the primary caregiver and had given up her career to help him. Between the house and the business, she would be comfortable. Dad would be fine as he still had the money he’d managed to squirrel off into other accounts Mom couldn’t touch. Bastard. Sophie wanted Mom to go after that as well, but Mom was just glad it was over. Once Dad left, she hugged Sophie.
“Thank you for everything, Sophie. I was dreading today, but it’s turned out rather well. Any time you want to come and visit me in Santa Fe, there will always be a room for you.”
“I might take you up on that. Now, go and celebrate.”
Tessa drove to a café she knew that sold the best cakes and hot chocolate in Seattle. If she was going to get a big abdomen, she might as well enjoy it now with some yummy sweets. Her mom sipped on her drink and sighed.
“I’m sorry you had to go through that, but I’m so glad you were there with me.”
“I wanted to be there for you. As a teenager, I was a pain and didn’t want to see what you were going through. I can’t believe he didn’t say a word to me today. His wife, at least said hello. He knows I’ve taken sides. The best one. So, what are you going to do now, Mom?”
Her mother bit her bottom lip, then shook her head and grinned. “I’ve wasted so many years. I think I’ll use some of the money to travel and see places I’ve only dreamed about. Hopefully, Coni will come with me, but if not, I will go alone. After that, I have some ideas. I’ll buy myself a little place in Santa Fe and paint.
